FIFA 11: Xbox 360 Achievement Details

Some wonderful omissions are the achievements we saw last year for using 5 star teams persistently and quitting games. Although they were for 0 gamerscore, completionists would still have gone after them and ruined a few games for the people playing against them. I'm really pleased that they have been ditched.
Plenty of achievements have been simply ported from Fifa10, namely:
Against the odds: Win a head to head ranked match using a weaker team. 10G
All my own work: Win a match using manual controls (auto switching must be set to zero). 10G
Always Friendly: Cross for a friend to score. 10G
Anything in particular?: Visit the Fifa11 store. 5G
Around the world: Play a match with a team from every league. 25G
Back of the net: Score 5 goals in one arena kick about. 5G
Eat my goal: Upload a video to EA Sports Football world. 5G
Experimental: Play 5 consecutive head to head online ranked matches with different teams. 15G
Good Form: Play 5 consecutive head to head ranked matches without losing. 20G
First time out: Win an online friends league match. 10G
Home and Away: Play and win in every stadium. 50G
Look at me!: Download your game face from EA Sports football world. 25G
In for the win: take a head to head ranked match to extra time with a weaker team. 10G
Rising Talent: Complete 100 Accomplishments with your virtual pro. 25G
Woodwork and in!: Score off the post or crossbar in a match. 10G
Virtual Legend: Play 500 matches with your virtual pro. 100G
Picture perfect: Upload a screenshot to EA Sports Football world. 5G
In the game: Create a virtual pro. 5G
Training Time: Work on your skills in any arena practise mode. 5G
Their names have been changed, but the criteria for unlocking them haven't, So rather than dwell on them when we have seen them before, lets look at the new ones.
New Career Mode Achievements:
Great Month: Win a manager of the month award in career mode. 25G
Record Holder: Get your name on any career mode leader board. 25G
Mastermind: Have a substitute score a goal in career mode. 10G
Folklore: Become a legend as a player in career mode. 25G
It's in the blood: Go from being a player to the manager (or player manager) in career mode. 25G
Good week!: Get yourself selected in the team of the week in career mode. 15G
Fairly straightforward stuff, I was a bit frustrated that there aren't more for Career Mode but they have been used elsewhere.
New Ability Related Achievements:
Aerial Threat: Score a header with a player who has the Aerial Threat specialty. 10G
Poacher: Score from inside the box with a player who has the poacher speciality. 10G
Crosser: Create a goal with a cross with a player with the crossing specialty. 10G
Distance Shooter: Score from outside the box with a player with the distance shooter specialty. 10G
Playmaker: Create a goal with a player with the playmaker specialty. 10G
These relate to the new player abilities, so you will need to check which players have those abilities, then put them to good use to unlock the achievements.
Goalkeeper Achievements:
Safe Hands: Play any match as the goalkeeper with no assistance. 10G
Established keeper: Play a season as a keeper in career mode. 50G
Once in a lifetime: Score as the goalkeeper in any match. 10G
Perfect Keeping: Play as the Goalkeeper in a Kick-Off match & finish with 100% Saving Accuracy. 15G
Warming the gloves:  Make 10 saves in 1 Arena kick-about. 10G
This is where it gets interesting. As everyone will now know, BAG is one of the new developments this year, so it's fitting that EA have spent quite a bit of their achievement budget to publicise it. Not too sure about the 「once in a lifetime」 one though, I already had reservations about 11v11 online play and how one person can spoil it for everyone else in the game, putting in an achievement encouraging it seems a bit strange, however light hearted it was intended to be.
Online Pro Club Achievements:
Virtual Debut:  Play an online pro club or pro ranked match with your virtual pro. 25G
One man club: Play 50 matches for the same online pro club. 50G
Team Training: Play a practise match with your online pro club. 10G
Club Glory: Win the cup as part of an online pro club. 25G
Virtual Football: Play a pro clubs match as a team of ten or more. 25G
Enough here to hopefully encourage people to have a good crack at clubs if they haven't already tried it.
Misc Others:
Hundred and counting: Play 100 head to head ranked matches. 100G
Notice the big change here and why it didn't make it onto the ported from Fifa10 list? Now the requirement is to PLAY 100 head to head matches. Last year you needed to win 100 matches, and with games that people quit out of not counting it became a bit frustrating, with many people needing to get close to 150 matches or more to unlock it. Hopefully, this year even games against quitters will count.
Home Maker: Change the home stadium of any team. 5G
Founding member: Include a creation centre team in a kick off match. 25G
New Choons: Import your own sounds into the game using the custom music and chants feature. 10G
One to remember: Save a highlight to the replay theatre. 5G
Plus 1 Secret achievement worth 100G
All in all, a pretty good spread. Certainly enough to get all the achievement hunters poking around in every corner of the game. I'll be working on putting a guide together once the game is released, i just wanted to get these up so that people who are interested in achievements could have a look.

Virtual Pro in FIFA 11

I'll be revealing more about online Clubs improvements in the near future but for now we'll focus on what we've added to Virtual Pro, with the main areas of focus being to increase 『Pro Personality' as well as creating new challenges & rewards for growing your Pro.
vp-news
The EA Sports Virtual Pro News welcomes a newly created Pro & gives some tips on what's to follow.
Creating Pro Personality
If you've been following the info on FIFA 11 features so far you'll know that increasing player 『Personality' was a major priority for our gameplay team this year. By 『Personality' we mean differentiating one player from another through their players' style & skills. We also felt that Virtual Pro needed more personality, as in FIFA 10 while not everyone managed to max out their player those that did found themselves with very similar abilities to the next man.
Playing Styles
So one feature we have added to increase personality within Virtual Pro are 『Playing Styles' for each of the selectable Positions & Roles. Playing Styles, along with Position & Role determine your starting attributes & the maximum value that can be achieved in each discipline.
The following Playing Styles are available:
Goalkeeper
Traditional Solid handling, kicking & positioning
Acrobatic Excels when it comes to diving & reflexes
Defender Left/Right
Full Back Attributes lean towards the defensive side of the game
Wing Back Less defensive skill but more ability going forward
Defender Centre
Stopper A traditional tough tackling man marker
Sweeper Better distribution at the expense of defensive abilities
Defensive/Attacking Centre Midfielders
Ball Winner High tackling, heading & solid distribution
Box to Box A combination of defensive & attacking strengths
Playmaker Excels in all types of passing
Midfielder Left/Right
Winger High ball control & crossing ability
Box to Box More evenly distributed attributes across the board
Forwards Left/Right/Centre
Creator Excels in attributes that will assist team mates
Finisher Accurate shooting at the expense of playmaking abilities
Target Man Superior aerial strength & positioning
As with last year a Virtual Pro's Physical stature will also affect their attributes with taller & heavier players gaining a strength advantage, whilst smaller leaner players will have that extra bit of speed. Community feedback on Virtual pro attributes was also taken into account to ensure any of the 『monster' Virtual Pro's from FIFA 10 won't be making another appearance this year.
role
Along with Accomplishments, a players Position, Role & Player Style will affect their attributes.
Selectable Traits
In FIFA 10 there was 10 Traits that you could unlock that were automatically added to your Pro, which again reduced the amount of variety in the world of created players. This year there are 20 traits to unlock with the user able to decide to assign a maximum of 5 to their player at a time, meaning players will have to consider what they want their unique abilities to be, as well as considering what their team mates might have selected to ensure a good balance of skills across the team.
The 20 traits to choose from are:
Long Throw-In Adds extra distance to your throw-ins
Second Wind Increases stamina at the end of a match
Acrobatic Clearance Adds spectacular defensive clearances to your game
Early Crosser Adds more curl to your early balls from out wide
Finesse Shot Increases your side foot effectiveness in front of goal
Outside Foot Shot Enables you to curl shots with the outside of the boot
Power Header Adds extra power to your headers at goal
Giant Throw-In Allows you to launch throw-ins right into the box
Swerve Pass Adds bend to your passes & through balls where needed
Power Free-Kick Enables you to take low drilled free kicks
Stutter Penalty Adds the option to feint when running up to take a spot kick
Skilled Dribbling Enables you to perform the skilled dribbling controls
Fancy Passes Adds extravagant passes & crosses to your game
Fancy Flicks Increases the likelihood of backheels & fancy 1st touches
Bicycle Kicks Enables you to perform spectacular overhead volleys
Diving Header Allows you to dive when attempting a header at goal
Driven Pass Enables you to play more powerful & direct long passes
GK Up for Corners Allows you to push forward for corners at the end of a match
GK long Throw Increases your over arm throwing distance
GK Flat Kick Increases the speed & accuracy of kicks from hand
traits2
Unlock & select 5 of a possible 20 traits to give your player something unique.
And finally, when it comes to personality, we've increased the number of selectable commentary names by adding over 700 new ones from all around the world, so if your name wasn't available last year fingers crossed Martin Tyler will be calling you out this time around.
Accomplishments & Unlockables
In FIFA 10 there was 230 Accomplishments to complete with your Pro, this has increased to 400 this year, meaning there is a lot more to do to max out your player. Other changes include difficulty based Accomplishments (Beginner, Intermediate & Advanced), with some now unlockable in regular 1-on-1 play with friends whilst others will require you to play well against at least World Class AI or online to add to your player. As with last year completing Accomplishments will increase your attributes, unlock traits, new kit & a selection of celebrations. Visual upgrades, such as coloured boots, goalkeeping gloves or helmets are unlocked as you reach Accomplishment milestones, so when you see a fancily attired Pro on the pitch you instantly know he'll have been well trained before he even touches the ball.
There is also a new Accomplishment Book this year with which to track your progress & players growth. This year the book can also be viewed at half time in online matches, in case you're left waiting for someone else to come back from a toilet break at the interval.
accomplishment-growth
The Accomplishment Book menu shows how many have been completed & your current abilities.
book1
Master the art of shooting by taking on some of the 50 challenges available in this category.
Well I hope that's given you a good insight into what we've done with Virtual Pro in FIFA 11 & that you're looking forward to building up your player & taking on the world again this year.
Good luck!

Gamescom: FIFA 11: Playing as the Goalie

A few weeks ago I ventured up to Vancouver to spend my day playing the fall lineup of sports games being developed by EA Sports. Among them was FIFA 11 and the many additions that EA has made to the game's "Be A Pro" career mode. The biggest addition is easy to point out in the crowd of other improvements: you can now play as the goalie. Not only does that open up multiplayer to full 11-on-11 games, but it presents a new way to experience the game on your lonesome as well.

I'm sure a lot of you are wondering if playing as the goalie was any fun. Well, I'm going to be honest here: the answer is both yes and no. There are certainly moments when leaping to your left, arm outstretched to knock away a would-be goal is actually as satisfying as scoring a goal as a striker, but those moments were too few and far between for my offensive tendencies. Playing goalie is more of a slow-paced experience than FIFA soccer has been in recent years, a fact that EA Sports realized when they created the ability for players to zoom ahead to the other end of the field if things get a bit lonely as the netminder.

By pressing the back button (select on PS3) the camera moves from its typical viewpoint set directly behind your keeper up the field so you can get your hands on just a bit of the action. You'll never have direct control over the players' movements, but you will be able to tell them when to pass and when to shoot by pressing the appropriate buttons. When the action moves back to your half of the field, simply warp back behind the goal and take the reins as the keeper again.

Gamescom Reveal Trailer

Controlling the goalie himself is probably easier than you imagine. To dive in a direction, simply flick the right stick. Diving is more about timing your flick properly than guessing the direction correctly. Regardless of which way you flick the stick, your goalie is going to dive in the direction of the ball. No matter if you have the diving assist turned to fully assisted, semi-assisted or off, you're still going to leap in the direction of the ball. Only your timing window is affected by tuning the option. Once you have the ball in your hands you can throw it to a teammate, kick it or drop it on the ground and dribble it out of the box. But be careful, you don't want to tire out your goalie with a lot of needless dribbling as that will diminish his range in the box.

The reason for the simplistic diving mechanic has to do with the strategy of properly aligning your goalie in relation to the threatening offense. A red arrow is placed under the feet of strikers so you know which way they're leaning and where their momentum is going. Players will fake shots, they'll curve them away from you and they'll make long passes to the opposite post that you'll need to properly judge in order to snare them in your arms. That little red arrow might seem a bit strange at first, but it soon becomes pivotal to your success on the pitch.

Playing as the goalie is certainly an acquired taste as it differs greatly from the rest of the core FIFA action. It's slower and more methodical, but that also means that the one shot you have to defend a shot could make or break the match for your team. The feeling of stuffing a breakaway is pretty special, but I'll admit that I wish diving was more free-form.

Moments like this are pretty great.

Elsewhere in Be A Pro you'll notice a bevy of new accomplishments, each of which will earn you experience points just as they did in last year's game. Of course, the inclusion of the new goalie position means that there is a host of keeper-specific challenges to complete. All in all the team in Vancouver told me that they've basically doubled the number of challenges across the entire Be A Pro mode.

To practice your game with your pals EA has developed something called Pro Clubs for use in FIFA 11. Basically this lets you check out how much time your buddy's have left in their current game, so you know how long to wait before inviting them to hop into your match. You can also take on the CPU with a full team of eleven players this year in order to practice for an impending contest.

All of these Be A Pro improvements and additions go along with the large amount of gameplay fixes and tweaks that have been made since last year's game. I've talked at length about things like the enhanced physical play and improved graphics, so all I'll say now is that the standard gameplay is coming together nicely and feels great in practice. We'll have more on FIFA 11 as its September 28 release date approaches.
